What We Do

Educating and Serving Philadelphia's Immigrant Community

The SSJ Welcome Center was established to respond to the needs of newcomers in our neighborhood, community and country.

We recognize the many challenges immigrants face as they begin a new life in our country. From learning English, to finding jobs, to communicating with their children's teachers, to navigating the healthcare system, our studetns face daily struggles. We aim to educate and provide resources to these friends.

In order to better serve the immigrant community we provide three types of services:

  • Education Services: Sisters, Staff, and volunteers offer classes in English, Computer Skills, and Citizenship Test Preparation.

  • Immigration Services: With a Board of Immigration Appeals accredited representative, the SSJ Welcome Center provides a variety of immigration-related services at no cost to clients. As of April 2016, we are excited to announce that 225 students have become naturalized American Citizens with the assistance of the SSJ Welcome Center.

  • Outreach Services In addition to classes, staff members accompany students to doctor visits, hospitals, and clinics, and provide resources to navigate the healthcare system. In addition to other services, the Program for Education, Awareness, Collaboration, and Empowerment for Immigrants (PEACE program) was created in 2013 to empower young women and single mothers to support one another through sharing resources, providing information sessions, and attending community functions.

Focusing on the betterment of the community and the improving of cultural integration, the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center is continually devoted to the immigrant community of Philadelphia.
