Sister Kathy McShane: Director

Sister Kathy is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA.  She has served at the Welcome Center since 2015. She coordinated the Literacy program at the Center and as of August 2017 assumes the role of Director of the Center.  She is so happy to be able to minister among so many wonderful people.  Prior to this, she has ministered in the field of Education and Special Education as a teacher, principal, and Pastoral Care Coordinator. She has her Master’s in Education from College of St. Rose with emphasis on Special Education.

Sister Marian Behrle: Director of Finance and Maintenance

Sister Marian is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA.  She has served at the Welcome Center since 2003. She oversees finances and maintains the care of the two buildings. She was founding director of the SSJ Literacy Project and has also served as an elementary school principal and teacher. Sister Marian is an alumna of Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, PA and Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Nancy Bordewick: Coordinator of Immigration Service

Nancy first started working at the Welcome Center as a full-time volunteer in 2006.  Three years later, she became a full-time member of the staff.  Accredited by the Department of Justice, Nancy helps our dear neighbors with a variety of immigration legal matters.  She also serves as an English instructor.  Nancy has a Master’s degree in Social Work.

Sister Connie Trainor: Assistant for Immigration Services and Instructor

Sister Connie is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA. She has served at the Welcome Center since 2013. During her time here she served as Director for 3 years, has been an  ESL instructor and she helped to develop the PEACE Group, a group of immigrant women who come together to share in Programs for Education, Awareness, Collaboration, and Empowerment for immigrants. She has taught at the elementary level in several dioceses and has also served as a pastoral associate in parishes in Philadelphia and Camden, NJ.  Sister Connie is an alumna of Chestnut Hill College and St. Michael’s College, Winooski, VT.

Sister Pat Madden:  Coordinator of Literacy and Technology

Sister Pat is a Sister of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA.  She has served at the Welcome Center since 2003.  The last fourteen years she has taught English as a Second Language at the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center She has worked as an elementary school teacher as well as a middle school principal. She has an M.ED in Language Arts from Arcadia University and she also has a certificate in ESL teaching from ICAL TEFL an online education site.

Tasha Mercer: Coordinator of Special Events and Grant Writer

Tasha Mercer has been with the Welcome Center since August 2016. Tasha is a current graduate from Saint Joseph’s University where she obtained her Masters in writing. Tasha has a passion for writing and helping others in any capacity. During her time at the Welcome Center, Tasha has found a way to incorporate her passion for helping, by working as the Grants and Events Coordinator. Tasha helps by seeking out support, writing grant proposals and managing special events for the Welcome Center.

Rosa Murcia García: Administrative Assistant

Rosa Murcia García is from Guatemala. She has been working officially at the Welcome Center since October 2008. However, she’s been around since the beginning days.  Rosa and her children actually helped prepare the Welcome Center for its opening in 2003! Rosa serves as the Administrative Assistant for the Welcome Center. She loves working here because she gets to meet so many wonderful people from different countries. Rosa also has a certificate in Spanish/English translation.

Maureen Burke: Assistant Coordinator for Literacy Services

Maureen recently retired from public education as an Education Language Learner (ELL) coordinator and reading specialist. With years of experience serving the immigrant community and providing professional development for teachers. Maureen was a good match for the Welcome Center, taking on her role as assistant coordinator for literacy services. Maureen is grateful to share the gifts given to her from years as an advocate and teacher to immigrants and plans to incorporate her gifts by helping the immigrant community here at the Welcome Center.

Lizam Morales: Front Desk Support Staff

Lizam is a longtime friend of the Welcome Center who is from Guatemala. She began at the Welcome Center many years ago as a student, who then eventually became a volunteer, and is now a member of the staff. After years of hard work and study, Lizam became our 250th naturalized citizen. As a member of our support staff, Lizam provides general assistance in many areas of the Welcome Center. Her friendly manner and smiling presence make for an outstanding receptionist who delights in welcoming all to the center.
